How to avoid cowboy roofers
Posted by Craig Foster owner of A1 Roofing Services
There are three types of roofer - Tradesmen, Cowboys and Con Men...
Now it's up to you to ensure you end up employing someone who mirrors the first option!
Skilled roofing tradesmen, like ourselves will give you value for money plus a job well done to a high standard.
Cowboy roofers are normally people who pretend that they can do the job. They will almost certainly be cheaper than a tradesman roofer but it is guaranteed they will leave you financially worse off. With bigger problems than before they arrived to do the work.
Finally there are out and out Con Men. The type who knock on doors uninvited claiming to have seen some problem or other with your roof whilst they were driving by. These people are simply out to rip you off. Close the door on anyone who approaches you in this manner and if they won't leave, call the police.
The best advice we can offer to help you determine who these Cowboys and Con Men are before it's too late is to always seek out three quotes for the exact same schedule of repairs. That way you can make a genuine comparison. Bear in mind though that the cheapest quote is not necessarily going to be the best quote!
Also you should never accept a price from someone who viewed your roof problem from the bottom of the garden or across the road! Insist the roof is inspected from the top of a ladder (provided Health and Safety Regulations allows this). For this kind of detailed, time consuming service you'll most likely have to pay a nominal fee. That said, at least you'll know exactly what the problem is with the roof and also have a better idea of what it will cost to rectify. This is surely preferable than to accept a 'blind' guesstimate based on a visual inspection taken from ground level some 50 metres or more away. Estimated prices for repairs based on these kind of inspections nearly always end up costing a lot more once the person concerned gets up there to do the job and discovers there’s far more work than he expected!
Last but not least always ask for written references or the names/ contact details of customers who will vouch for your potential contractors work. You should also ask to see proof of their professional insurance cover i.e. Public Liability. Finally ask for their tax reference number. Any genuine, tax paying professional will produce these details willingly. However it is up to you to ask for them. If you choose to take none of these kind of steps to help protect yourself then you really can't complain if you're taken for a ride?
